This past Sunday I sat across from my teacher, Bob Walker Roshi, in a ceremony confirming me as an Associate Zen Teacher in the Diamond Sangha. I gave my first Dharma Talk; I renewed my 16 Bodhisattva vows of Jukai; I received Walker Roshi's cautions and encouragements. I was surrounded by loving friends and held in the dedicated zendo space of Brattleboro Zen Center. On one hand a significant threshold to cross. On the other hand, there are reasons why experienced teachers and travelers of the Way temper their congratulations with ironic messages like I got from one long-standing Diamond Sangha teacher, "So I hear Bob has saddled you with the burden of teaching the unteachable. Congratulations (?)."
I am filled with gratitude for the teachers who guided my practice at various times over the years, foremost being Pat Hawk and Bob Walker. Also gratitude to Les Kaye, Susan Weimer, Michael Shoryu Fieleke, Melissa Myozen Blacker, David Dae An Rynick. Deep bows for the ancestors of the Diamond Sangha and Sanbo Kyodan lineages.
This evening, I'll unlock the doors to a new practice space and set out cushions and chairs. I'll sit with whoever is present, and I'll sit in the presence of all beings. We'll have a simple ceremonial zendo dedication, 25 minutes of sitting meditation, a talk and conversation, a brief traditional chant, a formal bow. Then clean up put things away until the next Wednesday evening. Whatever unfolds will unfold.
